KNITWORK and Fiber Art

Joy Ann Williams

Color, texture, pattern, image and heritage are explored through the medium of knit work.

“I’ve always been aware that I am part Irish and part Welsh and grew up with folktales, literature and music from those traditions. Once in a great while, a stray comment about Cornwall was shared. As a young adult, I immersed myself in the plays, poetry and music of the Irish, performing in plays by Williams Butler Yeats, J. M. Synge, and Samuel Beckett and playing Celtic folktunes on the Irish whistle. My sister’s interest in genealogy and the testing of my mother’s DNA added to my knowledge of my heritage, with information about Norwegian, Icelandic, Cornish and Scottish connections. I suddenly realized that I had been knitting in the traditions of my ancestors since I was a child. I’m from the places where we women knit together our time-tested traditions.”
